History Of The Institution

Alphonsa Eye hospital was started in the year 1984 by Dr. KC Baby. The hospital was christened ‘Alphonsa’ after saint Alphonsa of Bharananganam from which place Dr. Baby also hails from. He had just passed out from Govt: ophthalmic hospital (the present RIO) Trivandrum and was working at Govt. hospital Pala.
The limitations and the restrictions of the government job forced him to take a long leave and to think about a hospital exclusively for Eye by which he thought he could help more people and to do justice to skills and knowledge that he had acquired as an Ophthalmic surgeon.

The hospital was inaugurated on April 23 1984 by Sri K M Mani the then finance minister of Kerala and was blessed by Mar. Joseph Pallikkapparampil, the then Bishop of Palai. It was the first eye hospital in private sector in the district of Kottayam and was one of the first eye hospitals of the state. Hospital started functioning in a rented building – ‘Kurrekkattu buildings’ opposite to St Thomas school Pala, owned by Dr. Baby’s maternal uncle.

The beginning was truly humble .The hospital was on the 1stfloor of the building. A vegetable vendor and a teashop occupied the ground floor. The hospital had a consultation room, reception, and patient waiting area in one room, the other room was made into the operating theatre and the biggest room was made into a 5 bedded ward. Dr Baby had taken pains to buy a Slit lamp, which was prized equipment at that time. Mrs Gracy Baby was in charge of administration.
The response from the public was overwhelming and the same year on December OP Department was shifted to the more spacey Aramana buildings opposite to St. Thomas press. The hospital functioned in that same building for next 12 years

  • Cataract surgery was started in the same year (ICCE with Cryo).
  • After a year an Optical dispensing unit was established
  • The Autorefractometer was the latest trend at that time and the hospital acquired an Autorefractometer in the year1990 and that was the 1st step towards modernization.
  • The hospital acquired first Operating microscope in the year 1991.
  • 40 cents of land was bought near the Bishop’s house in 1994.
  • Foundation stone of the building was laid on March 1995 and the new building was inaugurated on May 1 1997.
  • Intra ocular lens implantation surgery was started in the same year under the guidance of Dr K Narayanan kutty. First Phaco Surgery was performed in the year 1999.
  • Cornea clinic was established on 1999, same year we started doing keratoplasty routinely..
  • Dr Philip Kuruvila renowned cataract surgeon of national fame joined theinstitution on 2001.
  • Retina clinic and laser unit were established in the year 2005 headed by Dr. Biju Raju, a leading retino vitreal surgeon of the state.
  • In 2006, a full-fledged glaucoma unit was inaugurated. Dr Alex Baby Son of Dr KC Baby and a consultant in glaucoma services L F hospital Angamaly is in charge of the unit.
  • Free cataract surgery programme in association with Rotary club of Pala was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Abraham Kaippanplackal on May 1st 2007

2008-2009 is the Silver Jubilee year of the hospital. The official inauguration of the jubilee celebrations was done by Sri K.M Mani the same person who inaugurated the hospital way back in the year 1984

On that occasion a free clinic for BPL group also started functioning. Patients identified as BPL by the Government are eligible to attend the free clinic on all first Sundays of the month. Treatment including medicines are given completely free and the patients who needs surgical treatment are operated free of cost. We take maximum care not to compromise with the quality of the surgery. So far hundreds have benefited by this scheme

This year we are planning to start a diabetic retinopathy screening/ awareness programme. To begin with we are planning to screen all the diabetic patients in Meenachil Taluk for diabetic retinopathy which is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in our part of the state .Dr Teena Alex daughter in law of Dr K.C Baby is in charge of the programme. Srimathi teacher, the Hon: minister for health has kindly agreed to inaugurate the programme. Dr Teena Alex daughter in law of Dr KC Baby is in charge of the programme.

Research

An Institutional Ethics Committee is functioning in Alphonsa Eye Hospital since May 2009. The committee holds a composition of Clinicians, Lawyer, Academic Professional and Laymen. This Committee reviews and approve all types of research proposals involving human participants with a view to safeguard the dignity, rights, safety and well being of all actual and potential research participants. The goals of research, however important, should never be permitted to override the health and well being of the research subjects. The Institute has so far initiated Nine clinical studies for which the Ethics Committee has given consent.
The Institute has initiated registration formalities with the Controller of Drugs, Govt. of India, New Delhi, and the approval is awaited. A Clinical Research Board is also functioning in the Institute wherein the study proposals are submitted and reviewed for feasibility. Once the proposal is approved by the Clinical Research Board, the same is taken up in the Ethics Committee. The Institute has so far published 21 articles in peer reviewed journals.
Alphonsa Eye hospiatal was established with the objective of providing state of the art eye care at affordable cost. To date we have provided top quality care to over one lakh patients and the efforts continue. Our array of 17 full time ophthalmic surgeons, 7 PG Students, 14 Optometrists and 48 specially trained Nurses ensure that we stay on course. Department of Vitreo Retinal Services has four full time Vitreo Retinal Consultants.
Regular training programmes at the Institute have helped the consultants upgrade their skills to match the best in the east and the west. They have been enhancing and updating their knowledge by taking part in conference, seminars and medical education programmes. Along the way, we also contributed immensely to the development of ophthalmology as a specialty in Kerala by organizing hands-on training and continuing medical education for young ophthalmologists and postgraduate students.
The institute has a well equipped library with the latest editions of all text books, broad band internet access, and all national and international journals in the concerned specialty.
The institute earned the coveted ISO 9001-2008 certification; the eye hospital in the State of Kerala to receive the ISO Certification in 2004. The hospiatal is also NABH Accredited.
